Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherrydir. Zach Cregger
A medical courier has one night to cross Raccoon City as the outbreak hits. From the Barbarian director, and the best-reviewed video game film ever made. Lean, properly scary and funnier than it has any right to be.
Olivia Colman, Alexander Skarsgård, Elizabeth Debickidir. Alex Huston Fischer, Eleanor Wilson
A fable about a lonely woman and the husband she has woven out of wicker. The surprise of the week. A salty, grown-up fairy tale with Colman at her most lovable, and the creature effects are seamless.
Dominic Sessa, Emilia Jones, Antonio Banderasdir. Matt Johnson
A young Anthony Bourdain washes into a Provincetown kitchen and learns the trade the hard way. Based on Kitchen Confidential, and a warm, funny, scruffy coming-of-age story. Sessa is great. One daytime showing at the Odeon, on Tuesday.
Robert Pattinson, Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondodir. Lance Oppenheim
The making of To Catch a Predator, and the sting that went horribly wrong. Pattinson as Chris Hansen is the reason to go, and he's superb. Stylish and uncomfortable in the way good true crime should be.
Inde Navarrette, Michael Johnstondir. Curry Barker
A shop clerk makes a wish, and his friend falls dangerously in love with him. Made for $750k and one of the nastiest horror debuts in years. It's funny too, which somehow makes it worse. Not a first-date film.
Hilaree Nelson, Jim Morrisondir. Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi
Two climbers in love set out to ski the North Face of Everest. From the Free Solo team and made for IMAX. Nail-biting and heartbreaking, so go knowing it's a sad one.
Andrew Scott, Brendan Fraser, Kerry Condondir. Anthony Maras
Eisenhower's chief weatherman has to call the forecast for D-Day. A war film where the battle is a weather map. Andrew Scott simmers and Fraser makes a good Ike. Daytime showings at Vue only.
Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickmandir. Ang Lee
Back for its 30th. Thompson's Oscar-winning script is sharp and very funny, and Rickman is wonderful.
Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Drew Barrymoredir. Wes Craven
Halloween weekend, the original, with a crowd. The opening scene still works.
Nicole Kidman, Christopher Ecclestondir. Alejandro Amenábar
A slow-burn ghost story with no gore and one of the great endings. One showing, on Halloween.
